"Wade in the Water" Film Screening & Panel: Reclaiming the Outdoors
⭐️ OPEN TO PUBLIC ⭐️ FREE ADMISSION ⭐️ AUC STUDENTS GET FREE FOOD & PRIZES ⭐️
Join HBCUs Outside and Outside Magazine at the AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library for a captivating “Wade In The Water” film screening and a panel discussion celebrating Black history in outdoor spaces. Filmmaker David Mesfin will take you on an incredible journey exploring West Africa's 1,000-year surfing heritage, revealing the deep connection between aquatic culture and Black history. The event is open to the entire community; please bring your blanket and snacks. Free food will be provided to AUC students with student ID.
After the screening, stay for an inspiring panel discussion, Reclaiming the Outdoors, exploring how Black communities reclaim the outdoors and create safe, inclusive recreation and growth space. Featured speakers include:
Panel Host: Ron Griswell— founder of HBCUs Outside and Boyz in The Wood, is dedicated to increasing Black representation in outdoor activities and leadership. He helps HBCU students and alumni enjoy the outdoors while promoting diversity and inclusion within the industry. Ron believes in pushing boundaries and empowering others through storytelling and shared experiences.
Featured Panelist: David Mesfin— an award-winning creative director and designer from Ethiopia. His upbringing in St. Augustine, Florida, inspired his connection to surf culture and influenced his work. In response to the racial justice movement, David created Wade in the Water, an award-winning documentary exploring Black surfing and aquatic culture.
Panelist: Taylor Crenshaw— founder of Peace in the Wild (PITW), an organization that empowers Black people to explore and conserve nature through activities like hiking, surfing, and river yoga. Taylor’s programs emphasize inclusivity and celebrate diverse outdoor experiences. A Clark Atlanta University graduate, she lives by the motto, “I’ll find a way or make one.”
Panelist: Courtney Lanctot— founder of The Unpopular Black, is dedicated to shifting the narrative around 'Black people don't do' when it comes to the American outdoors. By providing representation, information, and access, she aims to make nature more comfortable for the Black community. Recently, she launched The Adventure Directory, a guide to the American outdoors through the Black perspective.
