HBCUs Outside College Ambassador Program

In partnership with the National Park Trust, HBCUs Outside employ pairs of student ambassadors to establish sustainable outdoor clubs on their campus. Ambassadors are equipped with faculty advisors, support from our team, and cash resources to lead outdoor recreation and stewardship within their campus community.

Founded by North Carolina A&T alumni and Outdoor Activist and entrepreneur Ron Griswell, HBCUs Outside is a non-profit organization committed to helping students and alums of Historically Black Colleges and Universities get outside and to the top of the outdoor industry.

  • College Ambassadors

    Paid Student Leadership Role

    Ambassadors are the cornerstone of making outdoor adventures more accessible and welcoming for all HBCU students. These student leaders empower students to explore and embrace the outdoors. As an ambassador, you will gain experience and support in developing and leading experiences and adventures that connect students on your campus to the outdoors and stewardship initiatives.

    Ambassador Role: You and another ambassador on your campus will work together alongside a faculty advisor and our team to achieve the three goals:

    • Plan four or more club outings within the academic year.

    • Charter an officially recognized school club or establish student governance.

    • Participate in outing planning calls with our team and affiliated industry partners.

    Time Commitment: 6- 10 hours Monthly

    • Pre & Post Outing Calls: Attend brief planning calls for outings.

    • Outing Hosting: At least one ambassador must be present to host the outings.

    • Growth Workshops: Participate in workshops every two to three months.

    Benefits:

    • $1,500 cash stipend + bonus opportunities.

    • $2,500 yearly grant to cover outing costs.

    • Up to $2000 in funding to start a gear library for the outdoor club.

    • Free personal outdoor gear.

    • Partnerships with brands like REI and Outside.

    • Access to outdoor industry leadership, certification, and development opportunities.

    • Networking opportunities with the outdoor industry, HBCU students, and alumni.

    Skills You Will Gain:

    Outdoor guiding expertise | Project Management Skills - Community-building | Marketing | Communications | Time and budget management.

    The ideal student ambassador is a leader with a growth mindset who thinks outside the box and loves the outdoors. They should display good communication skills and be strategic and excited to plan fun activities. Additionally, candidates must be enrolled at a U.S.-based HBCU college/university and be in good academic standing.

  • Faculty Advisors

    Volunteer Advisor Role

    Faculty advisors are the Northstars in our program. Serving as the main point of contact on campus for students. They help guide ambassadors throughout the year, legitimize the outdoor clubs, and connect students to resources on campus. Additionally, advisors help us identify future leaders and present opportunities for the organization to create more impact on campus. Their guidance and support are essential to the success of our program.

    The Advisor Role:

    • Acting as an official faculty advisor.

    • Overseeing the club grant fund distribution.

    • Participating in check-in calls.

    • Assisting students with regulations and chartering.

    • Identifying student leaders.

    Benefits:

    • Funding for student leaders.

    • Support for outdoor club funding and equipment.

    • Access to HBCUs Outside's network.

    • Opportunities for pitching ideas and additional funding for personal projects, workshops, and growth opportunities.

    Requirements:

    • Help the outdoor club secure an entity that can assume liabilities for the grant money.

    • Help ambassadors access club grant funds as needed.

    • Meet the school’s advisor requirements.

    • Time commitment: 2 - 5 hours monthly.

    The ideal Advisor is passionate about outdoor equity and inclusion and environmental and social activism and is excited to positively impact outdoor recreation culture on campus. They are also excited to work with the next generation of outdoor industry leaders, are connected on campus, and can help students achieve their goals.
